What qualities should be prioritized when choosing a spouse according to Islamic teachings?
Answered by Mufti Muhammad Tariq
In Islam, while wealth, beauty, and lineage may be naturally considered, paramount importance is placed upon religious commitment (*Deen*) and righteous character (*Akhlaq*).
The guidance from authentic Islamic sources is as follows:
1. **Prioritizing Deen and Character:**
* **Sahih al-Bukhari 5090 / Sahih Bukhari Hadees 5090** (also in **Sahih Muslim 1466 / Sahih Muslim Hadees 1466**): The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) stated:
> *"A woman is married for four things: her wealth, her family status, her beauty, and her religion. So you should marry the religious woman; otherwise, you will be a loser."*
2. **The Value of a Righteous Spouse:**
* **Sahih Muslim 1467 / Sahih Muslim Hadees 1467**: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
> *"The whole world is a provision, and the best object of benefit of the world is the pious woman."*
3. **Modesty and Obedience to Allah:**
* **Surah An-Nisa 4:34 / Surah An-Nisa Ayat 34**: The Quran describes the qualities of ideal spouses:
> *"So righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in [the husband's] absence what Allah would have them guard."*
Therefore, when seeking a spouse, look primarily for one who observes her obligations to Allah, upholds modesty, possesses good manners, and will support you in living a righteous life.
